Russian birthday traditions

Each person’s birthday is some kind of special sacred holiday. This is a great occasion to bring together your loved ones, to chat, hang out and have a great time.

Birthdays are celebrated differently in different countries – it depends on cultural characteristics.
In Russia, birthday celebrations were originally only for the Tsar’s birthday.

In Russia, it is customary to invite guests to give them sweet treats. Guests in turn present gifts to the hero of the occasion.

Other traditions are ear-pulling and singing greeting songs. It is customary to decorate a festive cake with lit candles.

Because it is my birthday today I make you a special offer: If you enroll to learn Russian with me this week, up to 5th November, I will give you one session free.
