Good fun playing “Happy Families” Cards

I personally like teaching through activities. That’s why I recommend this Russian “Happy Families” game.

This game based on the traditional card game “Happy Families”.

During my long teaching career I have observed that many students learn more easily by doing activities.

Because this activity- based method of learning improves engagement, even when students make errors they learn deeply from their mistakes. Students easily gain understanding of the gap between theory and practice. It helps their brains create pathways for quick assimilation of information.

Let me explain the game as follows.

Ruslan Russian Happy Families Cards

This game practises у тебя/вас есть…?, the use of the genitive after a negative, the use of the accusative after Дайте, пожалуйста, … , and all the vocabulary.

Cards are in families, with four items in each family.

Learners work in small groups. First shuffle and deal out all the cards. The first player asks of one of the others, for example, if he or she has the car.

– У тебя/ вас есть машина?

If he or she does have the car then the conversation continues:

– Да, есть

– Дайте, пожалуйста, машину.

– Пожалуйста, вот она!

The first player takes the card, says thank you, and has another turn:

-У вас есть сок?

-Нет, у меня нет сока.

– Как жаль!

and the turn is ended.

As soon as you have a family of four cards in your hand, you put them face down on the table. The winner is the person who collects the most families.

You can use the same cards with adjectives. Ask learners to suggest adjectives for each card that you are going to use. For example : вкусный квас

As a follow up you can ask learners to write a record of some of the conversations that they had during the game.

These Happy Families cards can be used effectively for several other classroom games, notably Pelmanism.

There is also a more advanced set of cards, Pack 2, for more advanced learning.

Pack 2 of the Ruslan Happy Families cards includes names, animate nouns and plural nouns, for more advanced practice.
